Steele: Obama's 'star power' overshadowed more deserving Prize winners

By Michael O'Brien - 10/09/09 08:45 AM ET

President Barack Obama's star power overshadowed more deserving recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele said Friday.

In one of the first statements to pounce on Obama's having received the prize this morning, Steele said that Americans are questioning the president's accomplishments so far.

"The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’" Steele said in a statement. "It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights."

Obama's prize has been warmly welcomed by Democratic lawmakers who are supportive of the president's international agenda.

Steele is the first Republican to openly question the Nobel Committee's decision to give the award to Obama within the first year of his presidency.

"One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action," Steele said.

The Republican and the Taliban's reaction are almost mirror images. That speaks volumes as to what the Republican Party led by Steele? Limbaugh? Beck? Palin? Hannity? has become. This is not the Republican Party I was once part of.BY Clint on 10/09/2009 at 10:06
Michale Steele is a player-hater who should keep his Bozo the Clown mouth SHUT! Of course he'd complain about Barack's Nobel Prize because no the Nobel Prize Committee doesn't even have the faintest clue who Steele is. If there's an award for consistent idiotic blowhard blathering, Steele wins it hands down!BY STEELE BENDER on 10/09/2009 at 10:21
We would galdly give up our president if he so needed by the international community and we will elect a new one. Because he hasnt done crap for the USA! SNL said it best.BY troy on 10/09/2009 at 10:24
Obama is a special guy. He won the presidency when no one thought he could have. He was head of the Harvard Law Review and now he has won the Nobel Prize for Peace. Now, can luck be so consistent, when we are often told that it is like lightening, it does not strike twice in the same place. There must me some other force or forces at work. I say smarts, good temperment and divine blessings. What do you sayBY Tom on 10/09/2009 at 10:33
These were the very first thoughts that came to my mind, when I heard the news. What has he done!!! The only thing that comes to my mind, is that he gets up and reads a statement from a teleprompter. He has angered our Eastern European allies, he has met a stone wall in the Middle East, he has waffled in Afghanistan and violence has escalated in Iraq since he took the oath of office. The only peace that he as prospered is to the terrorists who know that he will do nothing to curtail their terrorism.BY Neil on 10/09/2009 at 10:34
Michael Steele should cheer up. He's far ahead of all other candidates to win the Steppin' Fetchit Award for buffoonery.BY LARGE PROFESSOR on 10/09/2009 at 10:46
Steele offers an excellent example of reptilian thinking, just snap at anything that dangles in front of you. The president of Steele's country received a great honor. It only took Steele a few minutes to think of something "wrong" with that.Obama's critics have rightly asked, "What has he done?" The answer is very clear to the rest of the world, he has proceeded with all due diligence to reverse the positions of the previous administration in ways that have made our country a willing partner in the world to solve the problems that face humanity on an international level. Attitude counts for something.BY Kirk Shriver on 10/09/2009 at 10:48
Why waste any time trying to come up with working solutions to anything that would contribute to humanity when you can just talk about it and win a peace prize. Barrack Obama, Al Gore… No surprise. But, thanks for those who didn't get the prize and have actually accomplished something.BY Thomas on 10/09/2009 at 10:50

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) has dropped most of his unprecedented blanket hold on most of the White House's nominees -- except a few defense posts, which remain tied up as Shelby seeks two lucrative military contracts for his home state. Later, Aravosis reports that the Department of Health and Human Services has opened an investigation into the California Blue Cross health insurance program, following reports that premiums there have increased 39 percent recently.… Read More »
