Sharpton pondering lawsuit against Limbaugh

By Tony Romm - 10/17/09 12:46 PM ET

Rev. Al Sharpton is reportedly preparing to file a lawsuit against conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who Sharpton charged on Saturday had inaccurately portrayed his role in a famous 1991 New York riot.

The latest spat between the two public figures concerns an op-ed Limbaugh published in the Wall Street Journal on Saturday morning. In it, the radio host fires back at critics who said Limbaugh was too divisive to become owner of the St. Louis Rams' football franchise -- an argument advanced most vocally by Sharpton, who even wrote a letter to the league commissioner last week asking him to reject Limbaugh's bid.

Limbaugh's op-ed on Saturday attempts to answer almost all of those original arguments, but he also takes a shot at Sharpton's remarks specifically. He writes:

"It didn't take long before my name was selectively leaked to the media as part of the Checketts investment group [which was bidding for the team]. Shortly thereafter, the media elicited comments from the likes of Al Sharpton. In 1998 Mr. Sharpton was found guilty of defamation and ordered to pay $65,000 for falsely accusing a New York prosecutor of rape in the 1987 Tawana Brawley case. He also played a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot (he called neighborhood Jews "diamond merchants") and 1995 Freddie's Fashion Mart riot."

Sharpton, however, said in a statement obtained by CNN that Limbaugh's recollection of the facts was "blatantly wrong." From the statement:

"Mr. Limbaugh's blatant and defamatory statements regarding the Crown Heights Riots falsely give the impression that Rev. Sharpton was present during the violence that occurred when in reality he had been called in by the family after the violence...

[snip]

In terms of Freddie's Fashion Mart, Rev. Al Sharpton, along with local elected officials supported the protests. However, a lone gunman who disagreed with the nonviolent nature of the protests entered the store and killed seven people and himself."

Ultimately, Sharpton said Saturday he would proceed with his lawsuit -- unless Limbaugh corrects the record and apologizes.

Liberals are really stupid people. You'd think that the mental midgets like Sharpton would have learned a lesson after the "drive-by" smear attempt of the Duke LaCrosse players. The only aspect of this story growing legs is more evidence of the vast network of Liberal crooks and cronies leading right up to the Obama regime.Going on 21 years now, every time the stupid Liberals try to destroy Rush, they only serve to make him stronger, and reduce themselves to circus clowns in the process. What they did to Rush was a disgrace. It was a lose for the NFL. What is happening to our Freedom? Sharpton just wants to stay in the news.BY cella smith on 10/17/2009 at 20:32
I don't know where Al Sharton is getting the money for this law suit since, if my memory recalls, he owes the IRS over $! million in back taxes! He's nothing but a baffoom!BY Reneeca on 10/17/2009 at 21:32
If you read through the left's maze of conservative bashing blogs (Huffington Post, Media Matters, News Hounds, etc.) you don't have to look far to find someone bemoaning the civil unrest in the nation and pointing a finger shaking with rage at the right. One of these bright bulbs, Eric Boehler (former journalist for the Rolling Stone and current blogger for Media Matters) went so far recently as to attempt to blame the right for the Kennedy assassination, really you can find my reaction to the story at "http://www.ihatethemedia.com/the-grassy-knoll-was-on-the-right-side-of-the-street". No where in these articles are the race baiters like Al Sharpton and his ilk mentioned, don't you think MAYBE they are a part of and major contributor to the problem?BY Patrick Michael on 10/17/2009 at 22:13
Poor poor Rush. Based on the posts here sounds like Rush is a victim. Conservatives control their destiny , victims don'tBY Dylan on 10/17/2009 at 22:37

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
