Alexander, drawing on Nixon era, warns Obama against keeping 'enemies list'

By Michael O'Brien - 10/21/09 10:51 AM ET

The White House should shy away from creating an "enemies list," the third-ranking Republican in the Senate warned Wednesday.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, drew on what he said was his experience in the Nixon administration to advise President Barack Obama of creating such a list, which President Richard Nixon had infamously maintained.

"Based upon that experience and my forty years since then in and out of public life, I want to make what I hope will be taken as a friendly suggestion to President Obama and his White House: don’t create an enemies list," Alexander said during a speech on the Senate floor this morning.

Alexander noted the White House's reported offensive lately against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Fox News network as prominent examples of the Obama administration's potential score-keeping on political opponents.

Alexander asserted that even members of Congress have found themselves in the Obama administration's "crosshairs" for having questioned various White House policies and practices.

"If the President and his top aides treat people with different views as enemies instead of listening to what they have to say, they’re likely to end up with a narrow view and a feeling that the whole world is out to get them," he said. "And as those of us who served in the Nixon administration know, that can get you into a lot of trouble."

"Let’s not start calling people out and compiling an enemies list," the Tennessee Republican added. "Let’s push the street-brawling out of the White House and work together on the truly presidential issues."

After Obama's critics and distractors have utilized and promoted the tea parties, the birthers, and a thousand points of partisanship, the president should refrain from acting like there is a concerted effort to destroy his credibility and position. Now, he is accused of creating a Nixonian enemies list because the White House has decided to not allow its critics to go unchallenged. It makes no difference that Nixon's list was private and involved criminal activity. If Obama can be Hitler, he sure can be Nixon too. Before you know it, Obama will be Kim Jong-il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Why not, all three has access to nuclear weapons.BY RickY on 10/21/2009 at 15:13
Why shouldn't Pres. Obama his people call out the mistruths. Perhaps, just maybe, this administration will be the truthful ones, or is that part of the problem Senator Alexander, telling the truth. What a concept!Keep up the good work on calling out the people who are telling the lies.BY Pam Lafferty on 10/21/2009 at 15:21
Enemies list huh? Can I reserve position 8359 as my number on that list?BY Mark X on 10/21/2009 at 15:31
I believe Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) is a bit late with his warning; perhaps this should have come right after the Whitehouse asked the public to "flag" any website or blog spreading "disinformation" about Health Care Reform via the email address "flag@whitehouse .gov".BY No1TrainedChimp on 10/21/2009 at 18:24
I would love to see a website where we can voluntarily sign-up to an Obama Enemies list. Maybe millions of people signing up would show them how childish they are.BY Mark X on 10/21/2009 at 18:56
@Pam: You mean the lies about Acorn? Or the lies about Van Jones? A better question is "why shouldn't the press call out the President and the Congress when they lie?" After all…that IS their job.BY Carl on 10/21/2009 at 18:57
What LIES Carl? ACORN was caught on videotape doing the things they've always done. Same thing with Van Jones. What lies?BY Joel Wollin on 10/21/2009 at 19:43
This guy, Lamar, is from a state where(1/3) of the people believe that Obama is a foreign born, and 4/10 people believe that he is a muslim. This is according to the survey reported in the Nashville newspaper. There are so many dumb guys in Tennessee, and he is one of them.BY Conservative on 10/21/2009 at 20:52
obama is a muslim, did he change religions after he threw rev.wright under the bus? did his family? i never heard of it. did he get baptised? i dont think so, did he ever find a church? did he go to church other than when he had to? he wants to take the word god out of everything, he bowed to muslim leaders. members of his cabinet and his czars are confirmed muslims and radicals. well, what religion did him and his family change to? bet you cant tell us.BY cargo65 on 10/21/2009 at 22:04
Yes, I was around for Nixon and Agnew, but if you ask of my age I will deny this; woman's prerogative. Obama ordering health insurance companies, such as Humana, to not comment on his health care plan is much like Nixon using the IRS to punish his political enemies. Obama threatening to use anti-trust laws against health insurance companies is very much Nixonian. Then there is Obama's "snitch list" which is disturbing. Obama is escalating his Chicago thuggery ways to a significantly higher level. This, to me, is direct evidence Obama is more than willing to violate our constitutional guarantees and equally willing to violate our laws. Personally, I believe Obama will be noted in history books as the worst American president, much worse than Nixon and Carter. There is no doubt in my mind the Obama presidency will be noted as a failed presidency and will be a one term presidency. Much of this has nothing to do with partisan politics rather has to do with a lack of acceptable presidential behavior and Obama's callused disregard for our American way of life; he is exhibiting an anti-America attitude. "Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
