Liberal groups take on Rahm

By Eric Zimmermann - 10/23/09 10:52 AM ET

As the fight for over the public option reaches a boiling point, a coalition of liberal groups is challenging Rahm Emanuel to step up White House lobbying efforts.

In a letter sent to Emanuel's office today, some of the most prominent liberal activist groups in the country are pressing the administration to take a stronger position on the most contentious plank of healthcare reform.

"We respectfully ask that the Office of the President take a stronger stand on a robust public option in order to enact true health care reform this year," says the letter, signed by representatives of MoveOn.org, Campaign for America's Future, and NAACP.

The group asked for a meeting to discuss the issue with Emanuel.

Suggesting the president hasn't been responsive to his base, the authors urge the Obama to "heed the will of the people and the organized progressive grassroots and take a strong leadership position in support of a robust public option."

The letter comes at a critical time in the healthcare debate. House leaders are frantically counting votes for a public plan, and Majority Leader Harry Reid is weighing whether to add a public option to the healthcare bill he's crafting with Senate Democrat.

The only way a health care reform bill passed into law, will be accepted by the Americans is one that provides competition. And the people will only get genuine competition if there is a public option in the mix. Other than that it will be a disaster and the Democrats will lose in 2010 even with the passage of a Health Care reform bill. Mr President please do not let this opportunity go waste. America will never be able to forgive you.BY sharmila sandhu on 10/23/2009 at 13:35
Ms/Mr Sandhu, I am afraid you misunderstand the situation. There are two kinds of companies in the U.S. who provide sickcare insurance to employees. One kind self-insures (they take on the risk with their own money). The other kind buys insurance at the market available in their states. If a public option passes, the second kind of company will stop offering their employees insurance, thereby forcing them into the government option. It will be cheaper to pay any penalties for doing this. The first kind may be forced to purchase insurance. If they are, they too will stop offering insurance with the same result. If they are allowed to continue to self-insure, they will make a decision on whether or not to continue offering insurance of their own. This will be a simple decision based on cost and how badly the companies need new employees.BY Fred Beloit on 10/23/2009 at 16:11
The public option is nothing more then a BALLON BOY(A HOAX)BY jake2 on 10/23/2009 at 16:23
I'm sorry to offend all the liberals but there are more moderates and conservatives in EVERY state in the union, who DO NOT want the ridiculous health care take-over in all these bills, let alone that public "option" hoax. Leave the other 85% of us alone pay for more temporary medicaid for those without. America has enough welfare/entitlement programs to help the least among us.BY sandyinohio on 10/23/2009 at 17:03
"Suggesting the president hasn't been responsive to his base - MoveOn.org, Campaign for America's Future, and NAACP". — Well, that says it all, doesn't it? — All funded by George Soros.BY cme on 10/23/2009 at 18:18
Guess what, Sandy and CME. You're giving out falsehoods. And you know it. Or, you're that dumb. I guess both!I'm sorry to offend all of the conservative, but there are more independents and liberals in EVERY state in the union, and the overwhelming majority of ALL Americans back a public healthcare option.Nice try, though. Please check your numbers and try again.BY YEE HAW on 10/23/2009 at 19:04
we should care for all citizens especially in healh care, paying for it however is a another problem, remembe ring that the way to [***] is paved with good intentions, mayb e we should cancel for a while the SPACE PROGRAM,and divert the money to health care.BY SEBATION on 10/23/2009 at 22:13
They must be very, very disillusioned, these groups, to find that campaign promises were really "just words," and that the president they adored is going to vote "present" again. That he will sign a Healthcare Bill without a public option, just to get credit for signing something, must be breaking their hearts. That he will eventually increase troops in Afghanistan will send Code Pink into a frenzy. Inspiration is always a good thing, but eventually, reality comes 'round again.BY Mary on 10/24/2009 at 07:59

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen.
