Top GOP recruit says Ft. Hood shooting shows 'enemy is infiltrating our military'

By Jordan Fabian - 11/06/09 07:32 AM ET

A top Republican congressional recruit said on Friday that the shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas yesterday by a solider allegedly sympathetic to suicide bombers shows that the "enemy is infiltrating our military."

Allen West (R-Fla.), a retired military colonel who served as a commander at the Texas base, said in a release that Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan's attack may indicate a broader effort by Islamic extremists to recruit downtrodden members of the military.

"This enemy preys on downtrodden soldiers and teaches them extremism will lift them up," West said in a statement. "Our soldiers are being brainwashed."

The release added that West claims "the horrible tragedy at Fort Hood is proof the enemy is infiltrating our military."

The National Republican Congressional Committee in October selected West as one of 32 new members of its "Young Guns" program designed to promote challengers and open-seat candidates in the 2010 midterm elections. West formerly served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was the 2008 Republican nominee to unseat Rep. Ron Klein (D-Fla.) in the state's 22nd district.

The suspected gunman, Maj. Hasan, is an Army psychiatrist tasked with helping soldiers who are in distress. Military investigators have not yet determined what sparked him to turn on his fellow soldiers. But Ft. Hood's base commander, Lt. Gen. Robert Cone, said Friday on NBC's "Today" show that Hasan shouted "Allahu Akbar!" before opening fire yesterday in a rampage that killed 13 and wounded 30. "Allahu Akbar!" is Arabic for "God is great!"

Though the 39-year-old's motive for shooting is still unclear, Hasan was preparing to deploy overseas and had previously voiced resentment toward the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. A base official told the AP he was deploying to Afghanistan. Law enforcement officials six months ago became familiar with Hasan because he allegedly posted online messages sympathetic toward suicide bombers.

But, according to the AP, investigators have not determined for certain that Hasan authored the post; the investigation is still ongoing.

West called on the military to create ways "to prevent Islamic extremism from penetrating our bases."

West said "it is imperative that we take steps to make sure this does not happen again" and that it is important to "objectively assess this situation."

This man should know. I believe him.BY poptoy on 11/06/2009 at 09:36
Nothing like some more right wing paranoid delusions to counter the real thing. The guy at Fort Hood wasn't brainwashed…he's a psychiatrist who is obviously a nut case himself. We don't need more politically motivated intrusion on our civil rights as proposed by West, and neither to do our soldiers. Haven't people learned anything from the Bush-Cheney years?BY Tony M on 11/06/2009 at 10:31
It's amazing how many of these Islamic terrorists don't understand that their religion doesn't advocate violence./sarcasm offBY ProfNickD on 11/06/2009 at 10:53
This man was not a nut. He knew exactly what he was doing. He was on a martyrdom mission and following the Quran to the letter. The good thing is he did not succeed. Not only is he not a martyr,he was taken down by a female. And just think. Islam states that women only have half the brain of a man.BY joe on 11/06/2009 at 11:29
Joe, could you point to the verses in Quran which tell you to join the military after high school, go through medical school and residency, treat soldiers for years, and then snap and kill a bunch of innocents. I consider myself relatively familiar with Muslim history and the Quran and the Hadiths, etc, but I just can't remember those verses.'Course, as an atheist, I think all you kooks and your bunk religions are dangerous. How you people determine which sky spirit is good and which one is evil is beyond me, but it seems to have a lot to do with geography and less to do with TruthBY timb on 11/06/2009 at 11:48
Right wing paranoid delusions? Tony M, I guess you have it all figured out, case closed. Your wisdom comes from where? I guess you are unaware that things have changed since 911. What about the civil rights of those that were killed at Ft. Hood? We can close our eyes, but that's not going to stop the next attack, wherever that might be.BY Tony C on 11/06/2009 at 11:58
Timmy. Are you suggestig that suicide bombers are all people that just snapped? What about the soldier that was murdered by a muslim in July? You see he planned this operation to the tee and carried it out almost perfectly. Almost i say, because he was stopped from becoming a martyr by a woman. If you know the quran then you know why he did what he did. It was not mental illness. It was and is islam.BY joe on 11/06/2009 at 12:33
So far there is no evidence this guy was recruited to do this by anyone on the outside. It appears he acted alone.BY giantslor on 11/06/2009 at 12:47
How ironic that - of all people - a mere woman would take t his nut cake down! What general was it that dug a pit, killed some hogs, threw them in, soaked their ammunition with swine blood, shot all but one Islamic nut, and tossed their carcasses into the pit and let the last one loose to tell what happened to their comrades? I surely wouldn't advocate such violent actions, but does make one think, "What if?". HmmmmmBY Eric Sizemore on 11/06/2009 at 13:12
As I gradually dismiss my 'theory' its genetic.. this type of insane, irrational, mania for murder mayhem is evolving into fact as far as I am concerned. "Psychiatrist'? oh sure. They take advantage of our freedoms (that they despise anyway). Money is the only motive for these types to live in the west. Like many from the 3rd world, they only see the west in terms of dollars. They dont the west the way we know it, let alone see it. Just sit back now, and wait for the politically-correct Parrots like Obama to rationalise it all, and boil it all down to a simple 'misunderstandin g'. All and anything islamic, should be deported.BY gordon weare  on 11/06/2009 at 14:16
