House passes anti-abortion amendment

By Eric Zimmermann - 11/07/09 09:56 PM ET

The House just passed a polarizing anti-abortion measure that would prevent insurance plans that receive federal subsidies from covering abortion.

The amendment, which will now be attached to broader healthcare legislation, passed 240-194. Sixty-four Democrats voted "yes" along with all but one Republican.

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) voted present in an effort to help kill the amendment and thus harm the chances of passing the entire bill. National Right to Life has announced they'll hold Shadegg's "present" vote against him in their annual legislative scorecard.

Democrats saw the amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), as a necessary concession to round up the 218 votes they need to pass the larger healthcare bill.

Stupak had threatened to muster enough pro-life Democrats to defeat the whole reform bill if he didn't get a vote on his amendment.

I am done with the Democrats. For some reason, they think it's OK to throw women's rights, especially poor women's rights, overboard. I felt that Obama ran a sexist primary campaign, and I thought that women's rights would be in peril if he won. I was right. I am not supporting this attack on women's rights. Next election, I am voting third party.BY Karen on 11/07/2009 at 22:48
Karen,Do mothers of children have the right to kill their unborn child? Is murder [which abortion unarguably is] a "right" that Americans hold?Is severely damaging a womans physiology as well as her mental well being, a "right"?How is supporting the personhood of every human being from conception to natural death an "attack on womans rights"?Last time I checked, over half of the unborn infants that are slaughtered by abortion are little, young, women.Isn't this an attack on "womens rights"BY Daniel on 11/07/2009 at 23:06
yes, women want the right to kill babies, but not me! at least now my tax dollars won't be funding the death of the innocent defenseless unborn babies that commie women apparantly want to dispose of.BY deanne mattice on 11/07/2009 at 23:27
Look Out Democratic's There will be a backlash to your stupidity. If you think Health care is more importanted to jobs then your crazy. We will see how long your in office come election day.BY Mary Reinert on 11/07/2009 at 23:54
If you don't want an abortion, then don't have one. Don't make that choice for someone else. Who's the commie? Me who wants everyone to have their own choice or you that wants to make choices for everyone. Don't think that because you don't believe in abortion you "win" at life and you are God's "star humans". You all suck as much as everyone else so get over yourself.BY Pro-choice on 11/07/2009 at 23:57
Dear Pro-Choice, You and all the others who think, a woman has a right to kill unborn babies, need to get over yourselves, and you need to soon. God will judge all of you. He commands all of us, even those who don't believe in him not to kill. Just because people don't believe in God, does not mean he does not exist. He most certainly does. I have received many miracles from him, including the grandson I prayed for 3 years ago he is now 17 months old and a very big Blessing to our family. Maybe you should call on Jesus and ask him into your heart, he may really surprise you he did me. I have never been happier.BY Linda on 11/08/2009 at 01:28
This amendment does not ban abortion from our country. It only prohibits the costs of the procedure from being covered by certain insurances. After doing a little research, I found that most health insurances never covered abortion anyway…unless the fetus was endangering the mother's health or if it was due to a rape/incest. The problem now is that federally subsidized health insurance providers aren't allowed to fund abortions for ANY reason. So, if your baby is killing you or if you are having your rapist's kid, I hope you can afford your own abortion because your health insurance ain't covering it! That is F-ed up…and I don't care what side of the debate you are on.BY THINK ABOUT IT... on 11/08/2009 at 01:36
"So, if your baby is killing you or if you are having your rapist's kid, I hope you can afford your own abortion because your health insurance ain't covering it! " I have to disagree, just because a women is raped still doesn't give her the right to end somebody else's life. Saying that the father is a rapist is no justification to kill the babyBY Drew on 11/08/2009 at 11:39
I love how people get all sanctimonious about abortion. Republicans get to preach morality at someone else, with no cost to themselves. Yet when it comes to another moral issue (namely, providing health care for recent mothers), suddenly it's a pocket book issue, and Republicans find every excuse to save themselves a buck.Republicans care about children from conception to birth.BY Abby on 11/08/2009 at 20:22

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »

John Aravosis points out that Sen.
