Axelrod voices worry about Ill. seat, Giannoulias

By Aaron Blake - 11/23/09 04:26 PM ET

In an interview with the New York Times, White House senior adviser David Axelrod openly worries about keeping President Obama's Senate seat in Democratic hands.

He also acknowledges the he and Obama failed to recruit state Attorney General Lisa Madigan to run over the state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, and he suggests that the Blagojevich trial could hamper the Democratic frontrunner.

From the Times:

Mr. Axelrod concedes that he and Mr. Obama failed to persuade Attorney General Lisa Madigan to run for the Senate seat vacated by Mr. Obama. “She would have walked into the seat,” Mr. Axelrod says. White House qualms about the Democratic frontrunner, Alexi Giannoulias, the Illinois treasurer, are self-evident, with worry that the Republican challenger, Representative Mark Kirk, will be needlessly formidable.

“The Blago saga will hang heavy over our politics, and that’s what Kirk’s banking on,” Mr. Axelrod says.

It is becoming painfully clear to any 'sentient' American, that these corrupt social engineers are willing to fall on their 'sickles' to advance their political agenda against the will of the majority of Americans.BY Jim on 11/23/2009 at 16:56
we ought to go back to the good old days, right Jim? When we could tell with our guts that things were going alrightBY jimmy on 11/23/2009 at 18:07
Why is this an article now? Giannoulias' weakness and the White House's worry have been obvious for months. Giannoulias as candidate will turn this into an easy win once Mark Kirk starts slinging mud and Kirk is kind of an idiot, so he should not win a state-wide election easily. Take a look at David Hoffman. He's clean as a whistle, tough, and competent.BY North Side Nellie on 11/23/2009 at 20:02
This is one weak field and this Giannoulias guy has a lot of shady stuff in spitting distance of him for a guy as young as he is…BY Greg on 11/23/2009 at 22:22
If Giannoulias is nominated the Republican attack machine will eat him for lunch. He's 33 years old. He's been (a lousy) IL state treasurer for 2 ½ years. Before that his only experience is running his family's bank - the lending institution of choice for Chicago mobsters and Tony Rezko.David Hoffman is the only one in this primary with the experience and background to take down Mark Kirk. They want to talk about corruption - with Hoffman, they won't be able to.BY John on 11/23/2009 at 22:47
I really don't think Illinois needs another Chicago politician in Washington. Look at the morons they have sent there now. Peter Fitzgerald a really good guy who after one term had enough of the goofs including the Illinois Republicans.BY Jobo on 11/23/2009 at 23:41
This is why Axelrod's company AKPD is consulting for David Hoffman's US Senate race.BY Martin on 11/24/2009 at 00:49
I'm a yellow dog through and through. I wouldn't vote for Giannoulias for so many reasons — ties to Abramoff, mob money, Bright Star scam, etc.. Hoffman is a no go for me. He worked for Rehnquist and Jacobs. For progressives this makes him either a Republican in sheeps clothing or a trader. Jackson is Blago's spokesperson and can't win for the same reasons as Giannoulias. Further, Giannoulias, Hoffman, and Jackson care more about polling for the general than running in the primary. As best I can tell the only one that is running a true progressive primary campaign is Meister. BTW if I had a choice between any Republican and Giannoulas, Hoffman or Jackson — I'd go with the Green guy. Don't know his positions and I'm still pissed at Nader for 2000, but Green would be my only choice.BY Mark on 11/24/2009 at 01:21
Take a good look at Giannoulias, of course the President and his advisors are worried. He's not electable. He's part of the problem in Illinois politics, whether his ties to Tony Rezko are thick or thin, it doesn't matter. Illinois is sick and tired of this type of scandal, and anyone with any ties whatsoever to the Blago/Rezko machine needs to be stopped before they can even get started. We can't afford to continue to live the past, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it". Do we really want to nominate someone who has these ties to such an embarrassing piece of Illinois Democratic history? There's so much at stake in this election, Democrats need to hold their majority in the Senate in order to continue to pursue President Obama's aggressive progressive agenda, and we need to nominate someone with a clear shot at taking on Kirk in the fall. Take a look at David Hoffman, former Inspector General, took on every part of the Chicago machine, and has fought corruption his entire public life. Look at the polls, this race is much closer than it looks, and we need to nominate someone who will bring a breath of fresh air to Chicago politics. David Hoffman is the man for the job.BY Downstate True Blue on 11/24/2009 at 02:08
The people of Illinois have to be willing to investigate carefully into their upcoming candidates if they want to clean up their state.BY Georgie Girl on 11/24/2009 at 09:59

"Punch will stun West," reads the headline above the fold on Drudge this Tuesday. The line refers to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent, vague promise this week to somehow "punch the arrogance" of the West on February 11. Also above the fold: A slew of weather-related links, including a report from the National Weather Service that predicts more snow for the already buried Capitol.… Read More »

"Healthcare theatrics" reads the banner atop The Huffington Post, which links to an AP story on the White House's struggle to bring GOP leaders to the table for a televised healthcare summit. The AP questions whether the event may have any utility outside of immediate personal politics. Below, reporter Sam Stein reports Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) plans to vote against the White House's nominee for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), Craig Becker.… Read More »

Moe Lane this morning summarizes the latest back-and-forth between the White House and congressional GOP leaders over healthcare. The White House wants Republicans to join Democrats for a televised healthcare summit in the coming days, but GOP leaders do not want Democrats' bill to be the basis for those talks. Meanwhile, Brian Darling takes on NYT columnist Paul Krugman's latest piece, in which he rails on the filibuster (and the GOP's use of it). "He is clearly way outside of his area of expertise when talking about Senate procedure, because his analysis is laughable," Darling writes.… Read More »

Spencer Ackerman leads The Washington Independent this morning with a post about William Lietzau, a top Obama White House appointee first installed during President George W. Bush's tenure. Lietzau handled the military commissions the Supreme Court later found unconstitutional, and Ackerman reports that he will soon become Deputy Assistant Secretary for Detainee Affairs.Earlier, David Weigel shared Defense Secretary Robert Gates' thoughts on the passing of Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha (D). Noted Gates: "In our dealings over the years, Jack and I did not always agree, but I always respected his candor, and knew that he cared deeply about the men and women of America’s military and intelligence community." … Read More »
