"Scrappy" Biden joins hall of fame

Joe Biden’s stories about his youth spent in a working class Pennsylvania town was a touchstone in his campaign for the vice presidency. His days spent playing America's favorite pastime, along with his long political career, brought a new distinction on Sunday: entry into the Peter J. McGovern Little League Hall of Excellence in Williamsport, Pa.

Biden, who played in the Green Ridge Little League not far from Williamsport, was inducted into the Hall before the 2009 Little League World Series championship game between Taoyuan, Chinese Taipai, and Chula Vista, Calif.

Chris Drury, the captain of the New York Rangers hockey team, was also inducted in the league’s hall of excellence on Sunday. Drury was the winning pitcher for Trumball, Conn., in the 1989 Little League World Series.

Karl Ravich of ABC Sports and ESPN said that Biden joked during his acceptance speech that he would rather have won the little league world championship than be vice president.

Before the game, Biden shook hands with the members of both teams.

Biden isn’t the first vice president inducted into the hall. Dan Quayle was inducted in 1990. Other inductees include President George W. Bush, Gen. Peter Pace, New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, former Sen. Bill Bradley (D-N.J.), columnist George Will, actor Kevin Costner and rock star Bruce Springsteen.
