Man with gun arrested during speech

By Jordy Yager - 09/10/09 11:39 AM ET

A man with a shotgun was arrested on Wednesday night by U.S. Capitol Police while attempting to gain access to Capitol grounds as President Barack Obama began to deliver his speech to a joint session on healthcare.

Capitol Police stopped Joshua Bowman, 28, of Falls Church, Va., at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday night several blocks away from the Capitol as he made a “failed attempt to gain access to [a Capitol] barricade,” a spokeswoman said.

After consenting to an administrative search of his vehicle, a shotgun in its case with ammunition was found in the vehicle’s trunk. He was transported to Capitol Police headquarters where he was processed and charged with carrying an unregistered firearm and possessing unregistered ammunition.

While the arrest was made by Capitol Police officers, the department was working in conjunction with U.S. Secret Service on Wednesday night as members of the White House and nearly the full body of Congress attended Obama’s speech.

Did frightened, paranoid Joe Wilson send him?BY Joy Klinger on 09/10/2009 at 13:09
Sounds innocent. Thank God we can own guns in this country.BY Pete Best on 09/10/2009 at 13:54
Why on earth should anybody have to register a shotgun or ammunition? He was only driving in his car anyways. Welcome to the Fascist District of Columbia.BY Mike on 09/10/2009 at 14:02
Mike: Because the law allows it, idiot. By the way, here's a news flash: having laws does not amount to fascism. You might want to open a book sometime, and read about what fascism really is, since you seem to be very confused. You seem confused about many things, actually; for instance, this gentleman was not just 'driving in his car'. He was attempting to get past a security barricade near the US Capitol during a Presidential address. There's a bit of a difference, there.BY Bud on 09/10/2009 at 14:06
I am sadly not surprised. When you have folks like Rep Joe Wilson disrepecting the President and himself, armed dissenters is to be expected. How sad for our state of affairs…BY Robin C. Greene on 09/10/2009 at 14:08
Welcome to the Fascist District of Columbia. So, Mike, you'd be OK about allowing concealed carry in the House gallery during the President's speech? This doofus was not going on a goose hunt. He was trying to get into the Capitol. While the President was there. While transporting a loaded gun. An unregistered gun. Last time I checked, gun registration laws were perfectly constitutional. You might try detaching your notion of manhood from your hardware. Even the Marines know the difference between "my gun" and "my rifle".BY Math Teacher on 09/10/2009 at 14:09
Yeah Mike! He was only trying to get into the capitol with that shotgun while the president addressed all members of congress. What's the big deal? God you people are crazy.BY adam on 09/10/2009 at 14:10
By the way, here's a news flash: having laws does not amount to fascism. ******no, but having laws which trample constitutional rights do.oh, you forgot about the constitution. well, thats makes at least two. you and the president who assumes the federal government has power to make people buy health care insurance.you knew something was up when it came out he was the only constitutional law professor ever not to publish an academic work—just two autobiogprahies . seriously, TWO autobiographies ??!!BY john boy on 09/10/2009 at 14:15
Peter's comment makes me wonder which part of "made a failed attempt to gain access" he did not understand. It seems to me "President", "shotgun", and "attempt to gain access" should ideally never appear in the same storyline. But then, maybe my perspective is fascist. I live in a place that registers my car, my marriage, and yes, even my rifles. p.s. We also have damn good health care :-)BY Lars on 09/10/2009 at 14:26
