Boston’s finest: Tom Menino, Big Papi and Deval Patrick

“I’ve said before that there isn’t a single challenge that we face in this community or in this country that can’t be surmounted by a renewed sense of community. And that really came through in the last couple of days ... this notion that we have a stake in each other ... and in the last couple of days everybody stepped up.”

I was born in Massachusetts and have spent half of my life there. We have seen much; the rise of Jack and the Kennedys, which dominated politics and the world these last 50 years. We saw the '60s rise in the Cambridge coffee houses. We saw the “curse” lifted by Big Papi and Manny Ramirez. We saw Tom Brady and Randy Moss.

We saw the Maharishi, we saw Whitey Bulger, the Big Dig and Don Cherry. As the bard expressed it, we’ve seen fire and we’ve seen rain and lonely days when we could not find a friend. But our best day since V-J Day was this past weekend when Patrick declared victory against the darkness in Boston on our behalf.
