Alexandra Fetissoff is always on the move. At 29, she's already lived in 11 states.
But Minnesota, one state where she's never resided, may be the most special.
Fetissoff, Minnesota Sen. Al Franken's (D) press secretary, met her fiancé Linden Zakula two years ago when he was communications director for Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D).
Fetissoff and Zakula are getting married in October in Montana, 10 months after they were engaged.
They're moving quickly to the wedding, but that's because the Minnesota spokes-pair is in for a busy 2014: Fetissoff has Franken's Senate race and Zakula is working for Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton as he gears up for his reelection campaign.
Fetissoff is no stranger to running around. Or getting down a ski slope, for that matter — she moved to Vermont for a ski academy high school as a competitive freestyle skier.
"I was born seven weeks early, and I just haven't stopped," she said.
Born in Manhattan and raised in New Jersey, Fetissoff mixes a New Yorker's outgoing personality with a Midwesterner's warmth. She brings people together, whether it's starting the first Franken bocce ball team or as president of the Senate Press Secretaries Association.
After graduating from Michigan, Fetissoff made her way to Washington via Los Angeles, where she received a friend's fortuitous phone call asking her to volunteer on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in Las Vegas.
"I said absolutely. I hopped in my car, and I drove down to Vegas," she said. "I knew I loved it from day one."
Caught by the campaign bug, Fetissoff has moved to North Carolina, Florida and Montana during the last three campaign cycles, while landing a more permanent job in Franken's Senate office in 2009.
Outside of work — something she says she and her fiancé separate from their personal life quite easily — Fetissoff eats out and cooks for friends much as possible.
"In my family, food is just this very important thing," she said, noting with a smile her proximity to the booming 14th Street restaurant scene. "We wake up in the morning and talk about what we are eating for dinner."
Zakula is currently living in Minnesota, and Fetissoff said the two haven't yet decided where — or perhaps if — they'll settle down after the 2014 campaign.
"I'm going for lucky 12 with my next state," she said. "And I haven't lived in Minnesota."
