Although he lived in many different countries growing up, Carlos Gutierrez Jr. says he considers Washington, D.C., his hometown.
He spent time living in Mexico, Canada and Australia, as well as in Michigan, as a child because of his father’s job.
His father was a top executive at Kellogg who went on to become secretary of Commerce during former President George W. Bush’s administration.
During that time, Gutierrez had the opportunity to meet the president and other high-ranking government officials. This was when he realized he wanted to work in the capital.
After graduating from the University of Michigan, he interned with the House Policy Committee and has been in the Washington area ever since. He worked on Capitol Hill for a couple of years before graduating from law school at Georgetown University.
In his free time, Gutierrez enjoys playing pick-up soccer and practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu at the Beta Academy gym. He also surfs when he has the opportunity, a hobby that he picked up while he was living in Australia.
“I think it’s very important to exercise, not only for your physical health, but it’s also very important mentally,” he said.
Gutierrez also says “It’s important to pay attention to how you look. Impressions are very important in D.C.”
He stresses the importance of eating well and drinking water. However, he says that he does not necessarily rule out any food or drink completely. He enjoys getting pizza delivered to his office at Clark Hill, where he works as an attorney in government affairs.
He also says he loves Cuban food. “I travel to Miami often just to get good Cuban food.”
