Jeremy Scott has made great strides in his career since he lived out of his car 17 years ago.
The history major from Malone University first came to Washington, D.C., to work as an historical interpreter at Mount Vernon, and lived in his car for the first week as he looked for a place to rent.
But after some time on the job, he realized there were more lucrative professions in the nation’s capital.
“I soon realized that $5.75 [an hour] wasn’t going to pay the bills in D.C.” he said, “So I decided to pursue a career in my minor, which was political science.”
Scott interned for then-Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) before accepting the position as intern coordinator with the senator. He left Capitol Hill in 2011 for K Street.
When not chasing around his two young daughters, Scott enjoys running and watching baseball. He is a fan of the Washington Nationals and the Cleveland Indians.
“I’m a person whose personal health helps my mental health. It feels good to go for a long run and clear your head.”
The former college soccer player also hopes to join an over-40 league once he is eligible.
“I broke my back falling out of my attic six years ago, so I stopped playing and haven’t played since, but I would like to get back into it. It’s very competitive here and I don’t play like a young guy anymore, so I hope when I hit 40 I’ll be able to get to the slower league,” the 37-year-old said.
He claims that he stays looking good thanks to his good genes, but he does not discount the benefits that working out give him.
There is a running joke in his office at Drinker Biddle & Reath about what kind of product he uses in his dark, shiny hair every day, but Scott says that is not his area of expertise.
“I don’t have any beauty tips. I’m a dude,” he says.
