Barton asks FCC to abandon net neutrality rulemaking

By Kim Hart - 10/20/09 04:45 PM ET

Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas), ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today sent a letter to the FCC asking Chairman Julius Genachowski to halt further action to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking on net neutrality, citing the fragile economy as the primary reason.

"In the macro-economic context of the most severe recession in a generation, independent agencies like the FCC should be extremely cautious as to the promulgation of regulatory policies which could retard investment in new technologies and cause loss of employment in the communications sector," Barton wrote.

He continued:  "I strongly urge you to consider whether proceeding with a rulemaking of this scope and effect is appropriate at this time. At the very least, a more prudent path would be to abandon the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in favor of a Notice of Inquiry which would allow the Commission to collect data related to broadband usage at a deliberate pace without the potentially stifling effect the proposed rules could have on investment in the broadband sector."

Earlier this month, 20 House Republicans sent a letter urging against net neutrality regulations. Signers of that letter included Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), ranking member of the technology and Internet subcommittee. But Barton's signature was absent from that letter. He was apparently waiting to send a letter of his own. Republican Senators also sent a letter to Genachowski.

Thank you for running this story. It is vitally important and none of the media is paying attention to it (shocking). This has the potential to radically change freedoms we currently enjoy. More people need to pay attention to what Obama and his Czars are doing.BY Suzanne on 10/20/2009 at 21:43
Czars! Are you FRAKKING kidding me? WHere was the Czar bitching under Bush Jr or his father or Reagan or Noxon who started it?FAIL! If Net Nuetrality is NOT passed you might not even be allowed to leave comments on blogs like these, no matter how stupi or ill informed they may be.Another case of wingnut Republiicans voting against their own interests cauuse Fox News tells em to. RidiculousBY MinsitryOfTruth on 10/20/2009 at 23:19
Big fail on MinsitryOfTruth . If net neutrality passes then you might not be able post, or anyone for that matter. It has a provision for regulation of content. Guess what this is considered, content. Given the current cabinets disdain for opposing opinions, I have a difficult time trusting them with the first ammendment, among other things. I look to the Fox News thing going on now and Obama's early "shot off the bow" on Rush Limbaugh early on in the term. Then you have FCC Czar Mark Lloyd who complimented Venezuela's Chavez on taking the press seriously. And that Chavez has, last time I heard they were down to one Independent TV station and it was under siege. The First Ammendement is very important. It give us the right to free speech and it also protects the media to a point. Don't take freedom for granted. Especially when there might be people who know The Constitution better than you do and how to get around it. It could be done by passing regulations in stages over time or all at once.BY Alouis on 10/21/2009 at 01:32
This idea to regulate content is nothing more than an attack on freedom of speech and thought.BY Lara on 10/21/2009 at 10:22
