MoveOn launches ad campaign on gun control

By Alexandra Jaffe - 02/15/13 10:59 AM ET

A progressive group is adding to the advertising war over gun control, launching a 30-second ad that features a gun owner warning of electoral consequences to inaction on guns.

"I'm a gun owner and a proud defender of the Second Amendment, but for years I've watched Congress take money from the NRA and then oppose any kind of reform that helps keep us safe," says Ohioan Jerry Thompson in the ad, backed by MoveOn.

Thompson goes on to say that "after the Newtown massacre and the NRA's disgusting response, I've had enough."

He warns Congress: "You take money from the NRA, and then continue to do their bidding, we're gonna remember that come election time."

The six-figure ad buy is running for a week on national cable and will air during the Sunday morning political talk shows.

MoveOn is also running a version targeted at Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) in his state. The senator, who holds an "A" rating from the NRA, has indicated an openness to President Obama's proposals on gun control.

"We're calling out Sen. Portman because we can't let elected officials like him pay lip service to gun violence prevention but then turn around and do whatever the NRA says," said MoveOn's campaign director Garlin Gilchrist.

MoveOn joins a handful of liberal groups, including one founded by shooting victim and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), in launching ads calling for support for expanded gun control measures.
