DSCC ad labels Heitkamp independent

By Alexandra Jaffe

Democrats launched a new ad on Thursday featuring a North Dakotan woman explaining her opposition to Rep. Rick Berg (R-N.D.) and her support for "independent" Democratic Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp.

In the spot, Mary LaDuke, of Bismarck, says that "everyone wants a senator that's going to look out for them," but Berg, because he is "beholden to his national political party," looks out for Republicans, rather than average citizens.

American Crossroads attacks Obama 'Forward' slogan

By Alexandra Jaffe

Conservative super-PAC American Crossroads and the 501(c)(4) nonprofit affiliated with it are out with two new ads on Wednesday, one generically attacking President Obama and the other focusing on one of the political action committee's main targets — North Dakota Democratic Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp.

The generic ad, titled "Forward?" features details about the sluggish economic recovery, including the number of Americans — 23 million — without full-time work, over clips of suffering families. It also includes shots at Obama's healthcare reform law, which is referred to as "a new tax on middle-class families," a common Republican refrain, and the debt incurred during Obama's tenure as president.

"Is that really forward, or backward?" the ad asks at the end.

The ad will run on a $6.6 million ad buy from American Crossroads in eight battleground states, including Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The second, specific ad out from the affiliated nonprofit, Crossroads GPS, is aimed at Heitkamp, currently one of Democrats' best chances at holding onto a Senate seat in a tough state.

"Big Difference" ties Heitkamp to the president, highlighting her support for healthcare reform and, in contrast, Berg's vote to appeal the law and his opposition to the stimulus and support for a balanced budget amendment. It will run on a $110,000 buy in the state.

Though Republican challenger Rep. Rick Berg is running ahead in most polls so far, the race remains close, largely due to Heitkamp's strength as a candidate. But Crossroads GPS has launched a barrage of ads there in hopes of tipping the scales in a race that Republicans and Democrats alike believe is necessary to win to obtain or retain control of the Senate.

Because Heitkamp is generally well-liked in the state, most of Crossroads GPS's ads have taken this same tactic — tying her to Obama, who lost the state in 2008.

Enviro group hits Michigan congressman with new ad

By Zack Colman

An environmental group is trying to tilt a tight House race with a new TV advertisement criticizing Rep. Dan Benishek’s (R-Mich.) environmental record in the Great Lakes State.

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV) will air the 30-second spot in the Marquette, Mich., and Traverse City, Mich., markets. It is spending $330,000 on the ad, which claims the first-term congressman is too close to Big Oil and supports policies that strip environmental protections for the Great Lakes.

As of July 18, Democratic challenger Gary McDowell had more cash on hand than Benishek, according to Federal Election Commission filings. McDowell, a farmer in the Upper Peninsula and a former state representative, had more than $620,000 cash on hand, compared with Benishek’s $498,000.

NRCC out with three new ads in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin

By Alexandra Jaffe

The National Republican Campaign Committee is out on Tuesday with three new ads attacking Democrats in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In Kentucky, the group's ad slams Rep. Ben Chandler for backing Obama's policies, and it highlights Democrats' cap-and-trade energy policy, which would put a cap on the amount of pollutants companies can emit and allow them to buy and trade credits to emit more. The policy remains controversial in Kentucky, where much of the state's energy comes from coal.

By Alexandra Jaffe

Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) released a new ad on Wednesday that aims to combat efforts by Republicans to paint him as voting in lockstep with his party and supporting President Obama's agenda.

The ad, titled "Everytime," features clips of Tester discussing a number of times he's bucked the Democratic Party, including his vote in support of the Keystone XL pipeline, a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution and his opposition to EPA regulations of particulate matter.

By Alexandra Jaffe

Republican candidate for Senate in Ohio Josh Mandel released a new ad on Tuesday touting his opposition to the government bank bailout and framing himself as an outsider headed to Washington to change government.

Mourdock attacks 'Obama Joe' Donnelly in Indiana

By Cameron Joseph

Indiana state Treasurer Richard Mourdock (R) is out with a new ad tying Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) to President Obama, calling him "Obama Joe."

The spot pushes back against attack ads pointing to previous statements that Mourdock argued programs like Social Security and Medicare were not constitutionally guaranteed rights and accusing him of questioning whether the programs were constitutional.

"Stop these lies and distortions. Richard Mourdock is committed to protecting and preserving Social Security and Medicare. It's personal for Mourdock: His parents, veterans of World War II, rely on these important programs. It's Joe Donnelly who already voted twice for Obamacare, cutting $700 billion for Medicare, denying services for seniors, cutting Medicare Advantage. No wonder they call Donnelly 'Obama Joe.' "
