Ann Coulter to headline gay conservative event

altCommentator and conservative firebrand Ann Coulter will be the headline speaker at the first annual "Homocon," an event billed as "a party to celebrate gay conservatives."

The 527 group GOProud is sponsoring the event, set for September 25 in New York City.

“The gay left has done their best to take all the fun out of politics, with their endless list of boycotts and protests," Christopher Barron, chairman of GOProud said in an e-mail announcing plans for the event. "Homocon is going to be our annual effort to counter the ‘no fun police’ on the left.”

Tickets for the event go on sale toward the end of August, and the group is selling sponsorships for $2,500 a pop.

“I can promise you, Homocon 2010 will be a hell of a lot more fun than chaining yourself to the White House fence,” Barron said.

GOProud was formed last spring as a counterweight of sorts to the gay GOP group Log Cabin Republicans. Barron was formerly Log Cabin's political director.

The recently formed group is working to establish a lobbying presence on Capitol Hill and accuses the Log Cabin Republicans of abandoning core Republican principles.
