Colbert super-PAC raises more than $1M

By Rachel Leven - 01/31/12 01:42 PM ET

The super-PAC created by Stephen Colbert raised more than $1 million since its creation in August, Federal Election Commission documents show.

Colbert, the host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," disclosed that "Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow" had received approximately $1.02 million as of Jan. 30.

In the second half of 2011, which ended on Dec. 31, Colbert’s PAC raised more than $825,000, filings indicate. The super-PAC disclosed spending more than $150,500 and having zero debt.

The super-PAC had almost $674,000 cash on hand as of Dec. 31.

Colbert and fellow comedian Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" have mocked flaws in the campaign finance system that allowed the creation of super-PACs. Colbert continued this trend in his statement to the commission Tuesday.

“Yeah! How you like me now, F.E.C? I’m rolling seven digits deep,” Colbert said. "I got 99 problems but a non-connected independent-expenditure only committee ain't one."

“I would like it noted for the record that I advised Mr. Colbert against including that quote,” super-PAC treasurer Shauna Polk added in the statement.
