Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) will travel to Washington, D.C., in April to be honored at a fundraiser for EMILY's List, the Democratic political action committee announced Friday.

Giffords will be given the group's annual "We are Emily" award, and the creation of a new award in Giffords's name will be announced at the event at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Giffords has made few public appearances since resigning from the House in January, one year after being critically wounded in a shooting spree in her district. Her major political action since the shooting has been to endorse and encourage her supporters to donate to Democrat Ron BarberRonald (Ron) Sylvester BarberPrinciples and actions mean more than Jeff Flake’s words Giffords to lawmakers avoiding town halls: 'Have some courage' Ten House seats Dems hope Trump will tilt MORE, her former district director, who is running in a special election to complete her term.

“Since the tragic events in Tucson, Gabby has continued to inspire us all with her determination and her commitment," EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement. "Throughout the country, Gabby is hailed as a symbol of bravery, of hard work, and of decency and civic leadership."

All three of Giffords's House campaigns were supported by EMILY's List, which backs female Democrats who favor abortion rights.
