Super-PAC backing Obama raised $4M in May
A super-PAC supporting President Obama’s reelection bid increased its fundraising pace in May, hauling in roughly $4 million, according to recent filings.
Priorities USA has raised more than $10 million since the beginning of 2012, but is well behind the torrid fundraising of the pro-Romney super-PAC Restore Our Future. That group raised $5 million in May and has taken in more than $31 million this year.
The Priorities super-PAC began June with $4.5 million cash on hand, after spending $4.2 million in May. Approximately $3.9 million of that was spent on independent expenditures supporting or opposing candidates.
The Obama campaign has expressed concerns about the massive amount of cash flowing to outside spending groups. Conservative super-PACs and nonprofits have pledged to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to help Romney win the White House, while groups supporting Democrats have struggled to get off the ground.
Earlier this year, Obama reversed his opposition to super-PACs and gave his blessing to Priorities USA. His campaign urged wealthy donors to contribute to Priorities — run by former Obama aides Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney — and argued the campaign couldn’t “unilaterally disarm” in the fundraising race.
