Former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) has endorsed Mitt Romney, making her the latest member of the GOP establishment to get behind the onetime Massachusetts governor.

"America is facing some of the greatest challenges in our nation's history, in particular with regard to our economic future," Dole said in a statement. "It is vitally important that we nominate an individual with both a steady hand for these difficult times and the experience and capabilities to get our country back on track."

Dole also served in the administrations of Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and briefly ran for president herself in 2000. She was also on Bush's short list for vice president and is the wife of former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.), the 1996 GOP presidential nominee.
