Santorum aide explains speech delay

DES MOINES, Iowa — Close to midnight Eastern Standard Time, an unidentified Rick Santorum volunteer came to the podium of Santorum's Iowa headquarters to explain to the crowd why the former senator had not yet addressed them.

"What we have here is an etiquette situation," he said, noting that it was customary on election nights for the winner to be the last person to give a speech.

"Someone needs to buzz Mitt [Romney] and tell him to come on, so we can get the winner down here and get the job done," he said to cheers.

"This rodeo is on," he added.

Santorum and Romney are in a virtual tie for first place with fewer than 100 votes separating the two with 97 percent of the counties reporting.

All the candidates except for Santorum and Romney have addressed their supporters.
