Santorum trails Huckabee’s totals in NH

Santorum finished with 9 percent of the total vote, lower than Huckabee’s third-place showing at 11 percent four years ago, despite a large time investment in the state last week. Huckabee spent a good chunk of time in New Hampshire as well, although he focused more on national television appearances than retail campaigning in the days before the Granite state’s primary.

The two hold similar views on social issues and built similar coalitions in Iowa. Santorum also lagged behind Huckabee’s vote total in Iowa, narrowly losing to Mitt Romney with 30,000 votes and 25 percent of the vote. Huckabee won the state handily in 2008 with nearly 41,000 votes, 34 percent of the total.

Huckabee narrowly lost South Carolina in 2008, effectively ending his chances at the GOP nomination. If Santorum falls behind the former Arkansas governor’s benchmark there as well, he is likely to suffer a similar fate.
