Crooner Pat Boone endorses Rick Santorum

By Alicia M. Cohn - 02/06/12 04:50 PM ET

Singer and conservative advocate Pat Boone endorsed Rick Santorum over the weekend.

Boone, a well-known pop singer in the 1950s and '60s, is now an activist and the spokesman for conservative seniors organization 60 Plus.

Santorum’s campaign over the weekend touted Boone’s endorsement for his connections to former Republican President Reagan.

“I’ve known Rick for many years and Rick has been a consistent defender of conservatism and the values our great nation was founded upon,” Boone said in a statement on Sunday. “I began supporting my friend, Ronald Reagan in the 1960s and I was a Reagan delegate at the 1976 convention because I saw in him a strong leader who would defend traditional America. I see many of those same qualities in Rick Santorum. He’s experienced, honest, and deeply principled.”

Last July, Boone indicated he would support Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has since dropped out of the GOP presidential race. He also spoke kindly of Mitt Romney’s business experience in an interview with Newsmax.
