Iowa Sen. Grassley hints he'll endorse Romney after Super Tuesday results

By Cameron Joseph - 03/06/12 05:09 PM ET

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) hinted to The Hill that he would endorse Mitt Romney if he does well on Super Tuesday, and predicted a quick end to the GOP primary if the former governor wins Ohio Tuesday night.

"If he carries Ohio it's going to sew it up for Mitt Romney," he said Tuesday afternoon. "I'm not in a position to say other people ought to get out of the race, but it may make me decide who I'm for finally."

Grassley was a highly coveted endorsement before Iowa's GOP caucuses, but decided to stay neutral. But in recent days he's sounded more like a Romney supporter, telling reporters on a conference call last week that the primary was "a two-person race now and you might even say it is a person-and-a-half race," referring to Romney and Rick Santorum.

When asked by The Hill Tuesday if he would definitely endorse Romney following the night's votes, Grassley paused, then smiled. "Let's put it this way: I might make an earlier decision," he said with a wink.
