Mitt Romney will win the Delaware primary Tuesday night, closing the door on one of the last remaining chances for dark horse candidate Newt Gingrich to influence the Republican nomination and edging the former governor closer to officially securing the Republican nomination. NBC News and CNN projected Romney's win shortly after the polls closed. Gingrich had hoped to collect the state's 17 winner-take-all delegates, campaigning heavily in the state over the past week. Romney hadn't visited in weeks, providing the former House Speaker a chance to rally downstate conservatives to surprise the presumptive nominee. But Romney ultimately prevailed, adding to the 685 delegates the Associated Press projected he held entering the evening. Combined with expected wins across the Northeast, Romney's lead over Gingrich's 136 delegates should significantly grow Tuesday night.

Newt Gingrich will not drop out of the presidential campaign Tuesday night, despite rampant speculation the former House Speaker could end his bid for the Republican nomination.
Gingrich told NBC News that a tough loss in Delaware, where he has campaigned heavily in recent days, would force him to "reassess" his campaign. But campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond told Yahoo News Tuesday that no decision would be made before he spoke later tonight in North Carolina.
Later Tuesday, Gingrich said the news media had been writing his obituary "since last June."

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), during a stop in Manhattan on Monday, lobbied New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to throw his support behind Mitt Romney.
"I just came in to pay my respects to the mayor. He and I are old friends from many years back,” McCain said, according to the New York Post. “I told him that I just spent last weekend with Romney and I thought that Romney was on message ... and tried to convince the mayor that we’ve got a winning campaign.”
Bloomberg, a Republican-turned-Independent, has long been considered a potential presidential candidate himself and is thought to have cross-party appeal. His endorsement of Romney would provide a boost for the Republican hopeful, who is looking to improve his poll numbers among independent and swing voters.
