Iowa Gov. Branstad endorses Romney after criticizing his Iowa campaign

By Alicia M. Cohn

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad (R) on Tuesday endorsed Mitt Romney as the GOP presidential nominee, saying his endorsement is “all about timing” and urging Republicans to “coalesce” behind Romney.

“I think it’s clear that Romney has the momentum, that he’s going to be the nominee,” Branstad said at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Poll: Three-quarters of GOP say Romney will become nominee

By Justin Sink

Mitt Romney's grasp on the Republican presidential nomination seemed as secure as ever Monday, with a new poll from the Pew Research Center saying some 74 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning voters believe the former governor will definitively win the party's nomination.

Just two in 10 of those responding to the nationwide survey say they believe another candidate will take the nomination. A strong plurality — 47 percent to 36 percent — see a prolonged nominating process as damaging to the party. The numbers provide worrying signals for Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, who are hoping to claw their way back into the race.

That's a reversal from a March version of the survey, when 47 percent of Republicans surveyed said that the contest continuing on was a good thing, versus 43 percent who disagreed.

Romney says he speaks regularly with Gingrich, less so with Santorum

By Justin Sink

Mitt Romney said Monday that he and rival Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich occasionally speak about how the nomination fight is playing out — and that he wasn't surprised Gingrich acknowledged Sunday that Romney would "most likely" emerge with the nomination.

"It was not a surprise — he and I have spoken from time to time, and actually we have also gotten together with our wives and spoken," Romney told Mike Huckabee on the former Arkansas governor's new radio show. "We're pretty open-eyed about this, as we talk about where we are at this stage. In all likelihood I will be the one that gets the delegates to become the nominee."
