By Alicia M. Cohn

Romney campaign: Obama auto bailout ads an 'attempt to distract' from economy

By Keith Laing

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney's campaign said Thursday that a pair of campaign advertisements released by President Obama touting the bailout of the U.S. auto industry was an "attempt to distract" voters from the economy.

“With millions of Americans suffering in the Obama economy, it's no surprise that President Obama would resort to negative attacks in an attempt to distract Americans from his abysmal record," Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said in a statement provided to The Hill.

"Mitt Romney proposed the right course for the automakers – a structured bankruptcy process to allow them to emerge as sustainable and profitable enterprises," Henneberg continued. "We deserve better from our president than cheap political attacks designed to cover up record-high unemployment, falling incomes, and out-of-control spending and debt.”

Poll: Obama edges Romney in Fla., but Rubio would swing state back to GOP

By Justin Sink

President Obama has engineered a 6-point swing and now narrowly leads presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney in Florida, but picking popular freshman Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) to join the ticket could give the GOP an edge in November.

Obama leads Romney 46 percent to 45, according to a poll released Wednesday by Suffolk University, an improvement for the president over a January poll that showed Romney ahead 47 percent to 42.

“Despite locking up the Republican nomination and a strong showing in the Florida Republican primary in January, Romney still has a lot of work to do to win over Florida voters,” said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, in a statement. “He would need to repair the fallout of negativity from the Republican primaries by being more likable and offering general-election voters a positive alternative to President Obama.”

RNC attacks ‘celebrity in chief's' Hollywood fundraiser

By Alicia M. Cohn

The Republican National Committee isn’t looking to make friends in Hollywood with new attacks aimed at President Obama’s celebrity status and famous supporters on Thursday.

In an op-ed written for the influential conservative Red State blog, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus calls Obama the “celebrity in chief” and hammers him for using Hollywood actor George Clooney in a recent fundraising strategy. The op-ed also names names, citing many high-profile Obama supporters who are also Hollywood stars, including Oscar-winning documentary director Davis Guggenheim, and previous party guests Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.

“While he’s noshing with notables, courting celebrities and soliciting stars, the middle class is being squeezed,” Priebus writes.
