Cain wins straw poll at GOP women's forum

By Meghashyam Mali - 10/03/11 07:50 AM ET

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain won this weekend's straw poll at the National Federation of Republican Women Convention, reports NBC News.

Cain received 48.9 percent of the vote, well ahead of the second-place finisher Texas Gov. Rick Perry, at 14.1 percent.

Republican front-runner former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney placed third in the poll, with 13.3 percent.

The poll was conducted among activist Republican women at the convention on Saturday in Kansas City.

The win for Cain comes after his upset victory in last month's Florida Presidency 5 straw poll, where he similarly won more votes than GOP front-runners Perry and Romney combined.

Polls suggest Cain could be gaining from Perry's missteps after a series of poor debate performances raised questions about the Texas governor's candidacy.

A national poll for Fox News released last week showed Cain gaining momentum in the GOP primary with the backing of 17 percent of likely Republican voters, in third place behind Perry and Romney.

Cain addressed the GOP women's convention Saturday shortly before the vote. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (Ga.), who received 12.5 percent of votes, and former Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.), who received 6.9 percent, also addressed the gathering.
