Gingrich backer donates $5 million to GOP super-PAC

By Rachel Leven - 04/16/12 01:26 PM ET

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s biggest donor contributed $5 million with his wife to a Republican super-PAC.

Sheldon and Miriam Adelson donated the money to the Congressional Leadership Fund in February, Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show. The Congressional Leadership Fund is a conservative super-PAC that is not earmarked to support or oppose a single candidate.

The Adelson family has spent $21.5 million through super-PACs in the 2012 election so far, the Huffington Post first reported. The wealthy donor has donated millions of dollars to Gingrich’s presidential campaign.

"It's no wonder that Newt Gingrich's sugar daddy is now pouring millions into a super PAC to help defend Tea Party Republicans in the House,” executive director of the House Majority PAC Ali Lapp wrote. “After all, it was under the disgraced former speaker that that House pursued a right-wing agenda soundly rejected by the American people."

The House Majority PAC is a Democratic super-PAC with the goal of electing Democrats in the House of Representatives.
