"It is false," McDonnell spokesman Tucker Martin tweeted late Saturday night when asked about the report on the blog Bearing Drift that cited two unnamed sources claiming McDonnell would soon resign as part of a plea agreement to avoid ethics charges.

"The man who pushed out the [Republican Party of Virginia] chairman over trumped up corruption charges while running for governor is currently in the middle of finalizing a plea agreement which includes his resignation as governor. More to come soon," the post read.

A later update said "multiple more sources" were confirming McDonnell's resignation. The website's founder, in an op-ed, has written that the author stands by his reporting but that if he's wrong "he may very well be removed as a contributor here."

McDonnell has faced increased scrutiny in recent days for receiving expensive gifts from a campaign donor, and is facing state and federal investigations into the matter.
