Would-be Pelosi challenger Shuler wins

By Jordan Fabian - 11/02/10 09:51 PM ET

Former Redskins quarterback Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) won reelection over his Republican opponent Jeff Miller on Tuesday night, denying the GOP a chance at a key pickup opportunity.

Shuler, a two-term congressman who represents the state's rural 11th district, fended off a tough challenge from Miller who attempted to tie him to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Democratic policies. The congressman voted for the cap-and-trade energy bill but against the healthcare overhaul.

Shuler distanced himself from Democratic leaders, going so far as to say he may challenge Pelosi for Speaker in the next Congress should another suitable candidate not arise.
