GOP takes retiring Rep. Stupak's seat

Republican surgeon Dan Benishek — a Tea Party favorite without political experience — has defeated Democratic state Rep. Gary McDowell to replace retiring Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.). Stupak has held the seat for 18 years, but announced his retirement after a tough healthcare reform debate that put him at the center of attention over his opposition to abortion provisions.
