Dems fundraise off bizarre Web video

By Sean J. Miller - 06/15/11 01:16 PM ET

A bizarre Web video has stirred up controversy in the California special election for former Rep. Jane Harman's (D-Calif.) seat and Democrats are trying to capitalize.

The ad, produced for the newly formed political action committee Turn Right USA, features African-American actors posing as gangsters and a stripper with the face of Los Angeles Councilwoman Janice Hahn (D) superimposed on her head. The 90-second video suggests the Los Angeles city councilwoman isn't tough on gang members.

Hahn's opponent, businessman Craig Huey (R) condemned the ad. His campaign manager, Jimmy Camp, told LA Weekly it was "inappropriate" and "highly offensive" and has no connection to the campaign. But the DCCC is looking for contributions to "fight back."

Robby Mook, the DCCC's executive director, called it the most "outrageously vile attack I’ve ever seen."

"Young African-Americans portrayed as gangsters. Our Democratic candidate Janice Hahn portrayed as a pole dancer and referring to her using extreme derogatory language. It’s despicable," he wrote to supporters, asking for $3 contributions.

Turn Right USA filed with the Federal Election Commission on June 13. It listed its address as Gardena, Calif., and has yet to receive any contributions, according to the FEC.
