Ohio State VP to run for new Dem seat in Ohio

By Josh Lederman - 12/02/11 06:21 PM ET

Former Ohio state House Minority Leader Joyce Beatty (D) will run for the U.S. House in Ohio's newly drawn 3rd congressional district.

Beatty, a vice president of Ohio State University, launched her campaign with a radio ad that starting airing on Ohio on Friday.

"It’s now clear this can be an historic election," Beatty says in the ad. "As a leader in the state house, I delivered on health care and education. I worked tirelessly with labor leaders and small business owners to protect Ohio jobs."

Beatty will compete in a new Columbus-based district where Democrats are heavily favored to win. Former Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio), who was defeated in 2010 by Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), has already announced a comeback bid in the district.
