Emily’s List puts two more candidates ‘on the list’
Emily’s List, a deep-pocketed group that backs Democratic women who support abortion rights, will add two more women to the list of candidates it might endorse: Tulsi Gabbard in Hawaii and Michelle Lujan Grisham in New Mexico.
Gabbard, a Honolulu city councilwoman, is running to replace Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), who is running for the Senate. Gabbard faces a tough challenge in the Democratic primary from former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann (D).
Grisham, a member of the well-connected Lujan family, served various appointed roles in the state government and is a Bernalillo County commissioner. She ran for the same Albuquerque-based House seat in 2008, finishing third in the Democratic primary.
She has an uphill climb in a crowded Democratic primary that also includes former Albuquerque Mayor Marty Chavez and state Sen. Eric Griego, but if Grisham can secure the full endorsement of Emily’s List she could be a player in the race.
An earlier version of this post misidentified Hannemann's political party.
