Former Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-Mich.) is seeking a comeback to Congress.

"Thank you for your support and encouragement — I'm running for Congress!" Clarke announced via Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Clarke won an upset bid against Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Mich.) in 2010 before losing to Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.) in 2012 after Peters's district was eliminated by redistricting.

Now, with Peters running for Senate, he's running for the seat once again.

His surprise announcement for a heavily Democratic Detroit-based district comes just hours before Michigan's filing deadline. He'll face a crowded Democratic field that includes Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence, who came in third in that race in 2012, and state Rep. Rudy Hobbs in a primary. Lawrence has the backing of EMILY's List.
