Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has backed former state Rep. Adam Hasner’s (R) bid for the Florida House seat currently held by Rep. Allen West (R).

Hasner had been running for the GOP nomination for Senate, but failed to gain much traction in that run. He dropped out of the Senate race and announced a House campaign in early February after redistricting led West to opt to run in a neighboring district.

"He is a passionate advocate for American values and will fight tirelessly for the needs of Floridians," Rubio said. "Adam's proven record of cutting red tape and wasteful spending is well known and his leadership on energy policy and critical national security issues will make him immediately effective in Congress."

The endorsement from Rubio, a GOP darling frequently touted as a potential vice-presidential candidate, will give Hasner further legitimacy with the Republican establishment. Former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.), West and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) have all thrown their support behind Hasner.

Hasner is expected to face former West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel (D) in the general election.
