Latham posts another strong quarter against fellow incumbent Boswell

By Cameron Joseph - 04/12/12 08:14 AM ET

Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) raised more than $400,000 and has just shy of $2 million in the bank to take on fellow Rep. Leonard Boswell (D-Iowa) in a coin-flip southwestern Iowa congressional district.

Boswell has not yet released his numbers, but has long struggled at fundraising: He had just shy of $500,000 cash on hand at the end of last year after raising less than $200,000 for that quarter.

Latham's strong fundraising has allowed him to go up on TV early to match an ad buy from a pro-Democratic Super PAC: He spent $150,000 on that, half of the $300,000 he's spent in the past three months.

While he netted just $60,000 for his campaign during that period he's in a district that's almost entirely new territory, and a Republican official said he'd used the rest of that money to build a ground game in the new district.
