GOP Rep. Turner won't return to Congress next year

By Russell Berman - 06/26/12 11:20 PM ET

Rep. Bob Turner’s (R-N.Y.) career in Congress will be short-lived.

The Republican, who last year won the House seat vacated by scandal-tarred Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), lost on Tuesday in his bid for the right to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

Turner lost the GOP nomination to attorney Wendy Long, who was leading 51-36 percent with 88 percent of precincts reporting. Turner did not seek re-election to his House seat, which he won in a special election last year, meaning he will not return to Congress in January.

Gillibrand is heavily favored to win a full Senate term after former Gov. David Paterson appointed her to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2009.
