Rep. Gibson up big in internal poll

By Cameron Joseph - 07/31/12 09:32 AM ET

Rep. Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.) holds a sizable 17-point lead over attorney Julian Schreibman (D), according to an internal poll released by his campaign.

Gibson, a top Democratic target in the Democratic-leaning district, leads Schreibman by 53 to 36 percent, according to the poll. While partisan polls tend to inflate their candidates' standing a bit, this is a good sign for the freshman in a district where President Obama would have won 53 percent of the vote four years ago.

He also holds a big cash advantage, with $1.2 million in the bank to Schreibman's $332,000 as of the end of June. The Hill rates this race "lean Republican."

The poll of 400 likely voters was conducted from July 25-26 by Public Opinion Strategies and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.
