Democratic nominee Patrick Murphy is out on Wednesday with a $160,000 ad buy, the first of the general-election campaign in Florida after both candidates easily won their parties' nominations on Tuesday night, that attacks incumbent Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) for voting "to end Medicare as we know it."
It's the first ad out of Murphy's campaign, and attempts to tie West to Republican vice-presidential pick Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-Wis.) budget, a common attack from Democrats against Republican candidates since the pick was announced Saturday. But West has been a vocal supporter of Ryan, voting for his budget and saying he was "particularly pleased" to support him.
The 30-second spot, which will run for the next 12 days, quotes West as saying "if you support Medicare the way it is now, you can kiss the United States of America goodbye," a statement Murphy campaign manager Anthony Kusich says indicates how extreme West is.
"While Allen West continues his longtime pattern of negative attacks and baseless claims, we need only to show the Congressman's unedited words to demonstrate how out of touch he is," he said in a statement.
The race for Florida's 22nd Congressional District will continue to heat up, as the competitors are currently running neck-and-neck, according to an internal poll released by Murphy's campaign. This new ad is a shift to the Medicare debate, after Murphy came under fire from West's campaign for an ad run by a pro-Murphy political action committee largely funded by Murphy's father that West decried as racist.
