Democratic poll indicates dead heat in California's 7th district

By Alexandra Jaffe - 08/29/12 06:18 AM ET

A new Democratic poll of voters in California's 7th congressional district shows a dead heat between Democrat Ami Berra and Republican incumbent Rep. Dan Lungren.

The poll, conducted for House Majority PAC, SEIU, AFSCME and Friends of Democracy, shows the two candidates each polling at 47 percent support. But when respondents were read positive descriptions of each candidate, Bera pulls ahead of Lungren by 5 percentage points.

President Obama won the district in 2008 and, according to this new poll, is poised to take it again — the poll gives him an 8-point lead over Mitt Romney, and he takes a majority of voters.

This is a rematch of the two candidates' 2010 battle, during which Lungren drew just over 50 percent of the vote and bested Bera by 8 points.

The poll, conducted among 401 likely voters in the district from Aug. 21-23, has a margin of error of 5 percent.
