Poll: Democrat Sinema leads Parker in Arizona's new district

By Alexandra Jaffe - 09/14/12 10:11 AM ET

A Democratic poll gives the party's nominee in Arizona's 9th Congressional District, Kyrsten Sinema, a 4-percentage-point lead over Republican Vernon Parker.

The poll, conducted by GBA strategies for House Majority PAC, EMILY's List and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees — three Democratic groups supporting the candidate — gives Sinema 45 percent to Parker's 41 percent support. Among independent voters, she holds a slightly larger lead of 7 percentage points.

The race is still in the early stages, as both faced competitive primaries that came to a close just a few weeks back. But Democrats and Republicans are both enthusiastic about their chances in the new district; though it leans Democratic, Republicans believe Sinema could be too liberal to win.

President Obama leads Mitt Romney by 6 percentage points in the district, which he would have won by 4 points in 2008, according to the polling memo.

The survey was conducted among 400 likely voters from Sept. 8-10, and has a margin of error of 4.9 percentage points.
