South Carolina governor sets dates for House special election

By Cameron Joseph - 01/02/13 12:53 PM ET

The special election GOP primary to fill incoming Sen. Tim Scott's (R-S.C.) old House seat will be on March 19, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) announced late Wednesday morning.

The GOP primary is likely to feature a crowded field in the Republican-leaning, Charleston-based district. If no candidate wins 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election will be held a few weeks later on April 2, with the general election on May 7. Candidates can file for the seat from Jan. 18-28.

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) is considering a bid for the seat, and his ex-wife, former South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford (R), has also not ruled out a bid. Other possible candidates include attorney Curtis Bostic (R) and Charleston County Councilman Elliott Summey (R).
