Lofgren is the first Republican to enter the 2014 race, The Quad-City Times reported. Iowa Department of Public Health Director Mariannette Miller-Weeks recently told The Des Moines Register that she is also considering a run for the seat.
Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa) currently represents the district in Congress, and is expected to seek another term, although he has not officially announced his reelection bid.
Iowa’s 2nd District leans blue, and Loebsack won reelection to a fourth term easily in 2012.
Still, Lofgren told the Quad-City Times he will work hard to win the election.
"I've always felt like the person who works the hardest is the one who wins," Lofgren, who currently serves as vice chairman of the Iowa House Appropriations Committee, told the newspaper.
If elected to Congress, he added that he would focus primarily on the country’s fiscal issues, particularly the debt crisis.
