Special election to replace GOP Rep. Bonner scheduled

If a primary runoff is required, that will occur on Nov. 5, and the general election will be pushed back to Dec. 17.

Bonner will resign this Aug. 2 to take a position with the University of Alabama system.

The special election has already attracted a wide range of names hoping to take the seat, which is expected to remain in Republican hands. Nine candidates have entered the race so far, and Alabama Republicans believe former state Sen. Bradley Byrne to be the current frontrunner.

Conservative commentator Quin Hillyer drew some attention after receiving the endorsement of former presidential contender Rick Santorum (R-Pa.).
