Reed has smooth sailing in Massa's district

By Aaron Blake - 03/12/10 03:00 PM ET

Republicans got another break in former Rep. Eric Massa's (D-N.Y.), as Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks announced Friday that she won't run in the GOP primary.

She joins former Rep. Randy Kuhl (R-N.Y.) in taking a pass on the race. That leaves Corning Mayor Tom Reed as the clear favorite for the GOP nomination.

"While it would have been a distinct honor to represent the hardworking residents of New York’s 29th Congressional District, after thoughtful deliberation with my family, friends and community leaders, I have decided not to seek a seat in Congress at this time," Brooks said in a statment.

Democrats, meanwhile, have yet to replace Massa. A pair of top hopefuls already said no, and local Democratic leaders aren't floating any more names yet.

A date for the special election has not yet been set.
