Santorum: I don't 'stay awake' thinking about gay soldier's question

By Daniel Strauss

Former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said he doesn't "stay awake" thinking about a question at the last Republican presidential debate, where the GOP candidates were asked whether they would repeal the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy by an openly gay soldier.

After the soldier asked the question, boos could be heard from the audience. Santorum said he would repeal the legislation preventing service members from serving openly, which provoked cheers.

In response, a number of gay-rights groups criticized Santorum for his answer, for refusing to thank the soldier for his service, and for not immediately condemning the audience's boos.

"I don’t stay awake at night thinking about this," Santorum said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A day after the debate, Santorum criticized the audience for booing and thanked the soldier for his service.

"That soldier is serving our country. I thank him for his service to our country," Santorum said on Fox News. "I’m sure he’s doing an excellent job. I hope he’s safe and I hope he returns safely and does his mission well."
