Poll: Hillary Clinton, Chris Christie in top shape for 2016

By Josh Lederman - 04/17/12 06:22 PM ET

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton could walk away with the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 if she chose to run again, a new poll showed.

Anything could happen in the four years until Democrats have to start selecting a new nominee, and Clinton has said repeatedly she doesn't foresee reentering politics.

But if the election were held today and Clinton were running, she would take 57 percent of the vote, according to a survey released Tuesday by Democratic firm Public Policy Polling. Hillary's favorability rating among Democrats is sky-high at 86 percent, with just one in 10 Democrats viewing her unfavorably.

Vice President Biden would come in second, with 14 percent. With Clinton removed from the field, Biden would come in first with 32 percent.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) tops the list of who Republican primary voters would like to see as their nominee in 2016, assuming Romney were to be out of the picture. Christie takes 21 percent, while two former GOP governors — Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and Jeb Bush of Florida — are tied for second at 17.

The PPP poll was conducted April 12-15 using automated telephone interviews. The GOP portion of the poll included 742 Republican primary voters and had a margin of error of 3.9 percentage points.

The Democratic side included 620 Democratic primary voters and had a margin of error of 3.6 points.
